THE NETHERLANDS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION OF LANKA (NAAL)

 The Netherlands Alumni Association of Lanka (NAAL) was founded on 21 December 1970 on a suggestion from the NUFFIC. The founding membership was 24 while the present membership exceeds 600. The first Committee comprised of nine (09) Alumni from IHE, ITC, ISS, PITTC and RVB of the Netherlands. NAAL was converted to a corporate body as a Limited Liability Company (Reg. No. A79) on 05 June 1981 under the Companies Ordinance. Its Objects are

  •  to promote spirit of Fellowship and co-operation among all members

  •  to provide opportunities to its members to meet and exchange ideas with visiting Dutch scientists, engineers, economists, artistes and experts

  • to maintain close contact with recent developments at the Dutch Institutes if International Education where Alumni have followed courses, and to continue exchange of current technical publications

  • to assist Sri Lankans proceeding to the Netherlands with all required information and advice relating to courses and the Dutch way of life

  • to strengthen cultural ties between Sri Lanka and the Netherlands

  • to promote or stimulate or undertake educational, social, cultural and development projects in collaboration with Universities, Institutes and Friendship Associations in Sri Lanka and the Netherlands

  • to distribute among the members a newsletter or bulletin and a journal in English giving news of current activities of the Association, of the members, of latest achievements in the various fields of study or technology, and of such other matters of interest to the Alumni and  to work for the general welfare of the Alumni.

Besides its social and cultural functions it initially acted as the funding agency for the conservation of old Dutch Buildings such as the Dutch Period Museum, where NAAL has its Office, YWCA Building in Galle Fort, etc. It also provided ‘life saving’ drugs to needy children at Lady Children’s Hospital in Colombo, and hospitals in Kalutara and Matara with funds raised by a Dutch couple in memory of their son. It administered a number of University Scholarships endowed by donors in the Netherlands and one endowed by the NAAL itself.
